Political credibility should not shadow the soul

Just when you think you have seen all the muck-throwing that the world of politics is capable of, a story like this comes out of the US of A.

I’m no student of politics but even I know to accuse someone of not being mature enough to run for office because they like to play videogames is, at best, a very weak argument. Surely more worrying would be a politician that spent their spare moments accusing every Middle East country of terrorism, and not looking at what was going on in their own backyard?

Do we really want a world where politicians have no common ground with the electorate? We only need look at the current London Mayor, Boris Johnson to see what his unique character brings to the world of politics. He may make mistakes and be laughable at times but he’s much more rounded a person than the 99% of politicians who seemed determined to represent all that is dourer in the world.

In moments like these I like to recant the words of Alexis de Tocqueville from his book published all the way back in 1835;

In Democracy we get the government we deserve
